Hello Loved ones!
With my recent weight loss I have been getting asked a lot of questions about the Miss USA's swimsuit competition last week. A lot of girls are being called "too thin" and unhealthy. I would like to remind everyone that we do not know the personal health of any of the women competing. I have known many girls who have a very hard time gaining weight, having to constantly take medication or drink shakes to gain mass. While at first I was jealous of them, I have since learned how important it is to take control of your own health and fitness. I also do know that in ANY industry, you are going to have girls who may be too thin. AGAIN, I do not believe that it is EXCLUSIVE to pageantry. I also know a lot of girls who are on the opposite end of the spectrum, competing and being called "too heavy". I have followed many of the girls on facebook on their journeys to Miss USA, and many of them would post pictures of the healthy balanced food they were eating, and checking in at the gym almost every day. Now, this is just my personal opinion, but I think that personal health is something to be celebrated, these girls are achieving the impossible! They are working VERY VERY hard to get into the best shape possible while still being healthy about it, and now many of them are receiving negative publicity.
As many of you know, I used to be close to 200 pounds, had horrible diet and exercise habits, and was very unhealthy. I had battled eating disorders, and emotional eating for years. With the love and support of my family and friends I was able to overcome my health issues. This was much more than a physical journey, it was an emotional roller coaster ride. But, I am a stronger woman for it. With less than a month to my national pageant, I am working on building muscle tone, and maintaining an active lifestyle. What follows are my tips for those of you struggling to do the same!
#1 EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT
You need to eat in order to lose weight! What a concept?!?! If you do not eat, your metabolism will slow down and store everything as fat! That's the opposite of what you want!
#2 SNACK SNACK SNACK
Do NOT deprive yourself of food in between meals, AGAIN, you want to keep your metabolism working! Try almonds, protein bars, fruit, yogurt, or even some skinny cow chocolates! ( My personal favorite)
#3 PROTEIN
When trying to build lean muscle, you NEED protein! You cannot just go on a liquid diet of water and fruit and expect to have definition! You can tell the difference between a girl who truly takes care of her body and one who starves herself.
#4 Exercise
I know, I know, you don't have time, or your too tired after work, but you need to get your heart rate pumping for at least 30 minutes a day! Even if your just jogging in place or running up and down the stairs, it is very important to get that cardio in!
Those are my BIG 4! I know they seem obvious and simple, but honestly, getting into shape is simple! It may be difficult, but there are no short cuts or secrets! You just need to work hard!
I put a picture of myself that I absolutely hated as my background on my computer and phone, so that I was constantly reminded of my fitness goals. I ignored the scale! Getting into shape isn't always about losing weight, and since muscle weighs more than fat, the numbers don't always tell the truth of fitness!
